  1. I had a wonderful experience. The hostess was very gracious. The food was delicious. The cottage has a great history. The walk in the hills was good for the soul. I enjoyed my stay at Abbotsford.

  2. Worst hospitality ever. We reached through a labyrinth of hilly roads only to be told to return without being offered even water. Honestly the place came across as unwelcoming. It may be cool and all online but its definitely not a warm place to be.

  3. What a wonderful place, it’s in the colonial style and suited our small group of bird watchers. It’s location was perfect just far enough from the bustle of the nearby town.
The rooms were very comfortable and the heaters and electric blankets very welcome for a cool February.
The staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. The food was excellent with lunch and breakfast served on the lawns.
I would not hesitate to recommend the Abbotsford Hotel to anyone wishing to visit this scenic part of India.

  4. While the property itself is undoubtedly gorgeous, the ridiculously odd and outlandish behavior towards us makes us want to rate this stay no more than a 1 out of 5.

For context, our plan was to stay at the property for a mere 14 hours, from 3 PM to 5 AM, as a pit stop on our journey from Binsar to Delhi. We looked at the website and Instagram page and booked through MakeMyTrip, where a “standard room” was listed.

We found the room to be nothing like the rooms shown on their website. It was small, dingy, and depressing. We later realized that the room we were allocated wasn’t an active listing on their website and was slightly secluded from the main estate. But since we were there for only a short while, we chose not to fret over it.

We decided to spend our time reading in the communal spaces, which were a key reason for choosing this homestay. However, upon arrival, we found that the common area was off-limits because the owners were hosting a private party. This restriction was not communicated beforehand, which was quite frustrating. We were told that we could stay in our room and that they could organize chairs right outside it. This really threw us off, as there was plenty of space all around us—gardens, dining room, the adjacent Apsley House (also part of the estate). We couldn’t understand why they would choose to confine us to our room.

The staff forbade us from venturing near Apsley House, stating that even the common areas there are for people who have paid more for their rooms. I asked if I could pay the difference between what I paid on MakeMyTrip and an Apsley House room. To this, the reservations team argued that MakeMyTrip takes a cut, so I’d have to pay that in addition to the fare difference. This, I thought, was just nonsensical.

After much discussion and debate, the manager allowed us to eat in the dining room of Apsley House. We ate under surveillance, with people watching over the two of us as if we’d run into private areas unless supervised.

Every homestay we’ve been to around India not only has plenty of open spaces for guests to freely move around but also has generous, warm, and hospitable owners who make you feel welcome. I felt completely unwelcome here and wouldn’t choose to go back again.

  5. Amazing experience staying at Abbotsford Estate Nainital. Beautiful property, excellent food and to top it all wonderful hospitality. The resort has an excellent location near the Mall Road with easy access to amenities. The restaurant staff was always smiling and happy to help to top off the excellent quality of the food. Rooms were very clean and well maintained. Will definitely go back with friends and family again.
