Visited here for afternoon tea. The Palace is a beautiful heritage property with serene views of the backwaters. The peaceful atmosphere and well-maintained gardens make it a great spot for relaxation. However, the interiors could use a bit of renovation to enhance the overall experience.
I recently stayed at Bolgatty Palace with high expectations due to its appealing online descriptions and photos. Unfortunately, my experience was far from what was promised.
To start with, the room was underwhelming – the lighting was so dim that it felt uninviting, and it made the space seem even less appealing. The air conditioning, which is essential in such a humid location, barely cooled the room, indicating that it might not be well-maintained. Given the palace’s heritage, I expected some quirks, but these basic amenities not being up to standard was disappointing.
The food was another letdown. Despite being in a place known for its cuisine, the taste was mediocre at best. There seemed to be little attention to flavor, which was unexpected given the location’s potential for excellent dining experiences.
While the location itself is indeed picturesque and serene, the service further diminished the stay. Room service was consistently slow, with long waiting times for even basic requests. This lack of promptness made it difficult to feel comfortable and well-taken-care-of as a guest.
Overall, the entire experience was disappointing, and the reality of the stay did not match up with the polished website photos or descriptions. I would not recommend Bolgatty Palace unless significant improvements are made.
Bolgatty palace stay was good with good service. Location and view were amazing. They have a swimming pool and kids area which was neat and clean.
Food was amazing and service was good. Prawns curry was yummy.
Morning breakfast also was very good.
Negative side is the attached bathroom was so smelly although it was neat.. that gave a very bad experience. And during our stay at night two electricians barged into the room without any warning saying they were checking the electric connections and were very rude to us.
The Good:
Good room service, polite staff (not reception), and great ambience are the main draws for this property.
The Bad:
The property struggles to overcome the negative impression left by the government heritage properties due to maintenance issues.
Lake View Cottage:
Initially given a room with relatively spacious single beds, we encountered a problem when the bathroom flooded into the room the tap was also not closing. Despite calling reception multiple times, the promised maintenance team never arrived. After contacting the booking agency, we were eventually provided with another room but we had to wait 2-3 hours. Unfortunately, the alternative room also had issues, including small single beds.
The Ugly:
At night, upon opening the door, a group of 5-6 people smoked right in front of our room and hosted a party with 10-15 people in a cramped room next to us. I don’t know how the management allows so many guests in a small room with no policies.
Alarms were unnecessary as water droplets from the AC served as a constant source of noise and nourished the pillow. The unpleasant smell emanating from the AC added its part as well.
Sustainable Tourism:
The lack of sustainable practices led to unnecessary waste, such as excessive use of plastic and paper wrappers for amenities like tea bags, glass water bottle caps, and dental kits.
Despite enjoying the historical ambience, the overall experience leaves me undecided about staying here again. It may be preferable to stay elsewhere and visit the property instead.
DO NOT STAY HERE! Dilapidated and smelly rooms ! Not sure how they are a 3 star resort. The rooms have not been maintained or updated in a long while. So it’s very uncomfortable staying here. The stink from the AC is especially nauseating. We checked if there are other rooms but don’t seem to have any clean or updated rooms.
However, the resort space is pretty good and has some good views of the marina. So if you are planning to come, it is a nice place to visit but do not stay. You will regret.
