In a rapidly developing concrete jungle, there is still a place that blends right into nature.
A small and truly eco-friendly resort that has survived the pressures of succumbing to fast paced new age and highly priced resorts that have come up in Havelock Island.
I have been coming to the Andamans since 2009 and one thing that has not changed is the simplicity and beauty of Emerald Gecko. I have never stayed anywhere else and am so glad i found this place.
A week ago when I had to travel to Havelock once again, I checked if Gecko was free. To my luck, we found two cottages that were vacant on the days we were traveling.
The rooms in Gecko are definitely not for tourists looking for ultra luxury rooms with room service at a call of a bell. These are cozy wooden cottages that are very simple and very practical too. I guess targeted at the backpacker tourists who would just love a place in front of the beach with basic amenities.
Having said that the place is still very clean and well maintained. No compromise on that. The caretakers and service staff like Manohar ensure that you have a comfortable stay. They do have a kitchen too. if you can order in advance they sure can cook up a lovely meal. But you need to let them know early.
With all the rampant development happening all around this place, I love the fact that gecko has stuck to its core offering of simplicity and being one with nature. I truly hope it stays that way.
It was really nice to stay in gecko once again and am hoping it remains the same for many years to come.
Till I check in again!
Emerald Gecko is one of the oldest stays in Havelock, it is also one of the most reasonably priced stays on the island
I stayed in a cottage at the gecko for about a week during my stay, and had an amazing time
The cottage faces the beach, and I could hear the waves hitting the shore line at night. Service was great, everything was in order inside my cottage, and for my few personal niggles, the caretaker was more than happy to accomodate my demands and service them promptly
Network (Airtel) works well at the resort. There is wifi that can be used at the cafe
I would also recommend the coconut prawns dish at the cafe, I really liked it
Would definitely recommend this for fellow Andaman explorers, and would stay here in the future as well
I really enjoyed it. The staff were incredibly modest, always wearing smiles and sweetness. The rooms were lovely. The breakfast was absolutely delicious 😋🤤 It may have been a bit small, but it was more than enough for one person. I had a great time.
Definitely a “unique eco experience”, if you consider a kind of slum hut a unique eco experience. The pictures are nice, but the reality is a very low quality falling apart kind of hut with a matrass on the floor. Personally i don’t mind old huts, but i certainly don’t want to pay a full blown up Havelock price for it. (A shocking 2500 Rs for attached). According to one other comment of a complaining Indian person, the owner has said this place is ment only for foreigners, but you have to be a pretty naive foreigner to buy into this. Beware of eco-scam!
PS To be honest i never stayed here. I just came to check the place out and couldn’t believe my eyes.
Ok you know you will sleep in a bamboo hut.. but you take shower in mud, the toilets are always stuck, the electricity cuts 10 times by night so you loose the minimum of air you have with the very useless fan in your room. The bed sheets are very dirty, same for pillows and towels, you have fly’s shits everywhere….
And don’t eat there, it’s really expensive, then they charge you more for no reasons and it’s not good. BUT if you are fishers and bring them a good fish they will cook it for you and share a beer in the kitchen, very nice team but not in the good place..
But the staff is very modest and nice
